Depois de postar diversas manifestações sobre o incêndio da Amazônia no Instagram, o ator Leonardo DiCaprio e sua fundação, a Earth Alliance, comprometeram-se doar US$ 5 milhões para a preservação da floresta amazônica.A decisão foi explicada em um novo post no Instagram, publicado no domingo (25/8): "A Earth Alliance, lançada em julho por mim, Laurene Powell Jobs [viúva de Steve Jobs] e Brian Sheth, formou um fundo de emergência para a Amazônia, com um comprometimento de US$ 5 milhões para preservar recursos críticos e comunidade indígenas, se unindo com parceiros locais para proteger a biodiversidade da Amazônia contra o recente crescimento de incêndios por toda a região".DiCaprio incluiu um link no qual seus seguidores podem contribuir para aumentar o fundo emergencial. "100% de sua doação vai ser repassada para os nossos parceiros, que estão trabalhando em campo para proteger a Amazônia", escreveu."A Earth Alliance está comprometida com a proteção do mundo natural. Estamos profundamente preocupados com a crise na Amazônia, que torna mais evidente o balanço delicado de clima, biodiversidade e bem-estar das comunidades indígenas", acrescentou.Em outro post do domingo, DiCaprio enalteceu o trabalho dos brigadistas de incêndio voluntários, revelando algo que até então não era de conhecimento amplo. Ele trabalhou em combate a incêndios na Amazônia em 2017, e usou essa experiência para descrever o trabalho dos combatentes do fogo."Na Amazônia, eles freqüentemente trabalham com nada além de facões, sopradores de folhas e pequenos tanques de supressores de fogo. Eu trabalhei com uma tropa deles no leste do Brasil em 2017. Foi um trabalho duro e às vezes sem esperança. Alguns deles eram homens de tribos Guajajara que dedicaram suas vidas a proteger o que restou de suas florestas ancestrais - a maioria já havia sido explorada e queimada. Alguns deles foram assassinados por tentarem proteger a região. Tem sido brutal e trágico e todos nós devemos nos curvar a eles pelo que eles fazem".Esta experiência também permitiu DiCaprio selecionar pessoalmente as entidades que considera mais comprometidas com a floresta. Assim, o dinheiro da sua organização será enviado diretamente para ONGs, sem passar por intermediação do governo Bolsonaro - cuja ingerência fez com que Alemanha e Noruega paralisassem o Fundo da Amazônia. As entidades favorecidas são Instituto Associação Floresta Protegida (Kayapo), Coordination of the Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (COIAB), Instituto Kabu (Kayapo), Instituto Raoni (Kayapo) e Instituto Socioambiental (ISA).Três dias antes, DiCaprio tinha publicado um texto altamente politizado sobre o incêndio, em que citava o aumento de 84% no desmatamento da Amazônia nos primeiros meses do governo de Bolsonaro e citava nominalmente o presidente do Brasil como principal responsável pela crise. In the Amazon they often work with nothing but machetes and leaf blowers and small tanks of fire suppressant. I worked with a troop of them in eastern Brazil back in 2017. It was tough hot and at times hopeless work.
