A diretora Nikki Caro e o ator Jimmy Wong usaram o Instagram para lembrar que “Mulan” deveria ter estreado neste fim de semana, antes da pandemia de coronavírus suspender todos os lançamentos de cinema. Para marcar a data, eles postaram imagens e lembranças dos bastidores da produção. Nikki Caro aproveitou a ocasião para iniciar um diário online sobre sua experiência das filmagens, ilustrado pelas primeiras fotos feitas pela produção da atriz Yifei Liu como Mulan. “OHoje deveria ter sido o incrível momento em que lançaríamos o live-action de ‘Mulan’ pelo mundo. Enquanto isso não ocorre, resolvi compartilhar minha jornada como diretora dessa história icônica. Espero que aproveitem meu diário reverso enquanto relembro da gloriosa e às vezes assustadora experiência de fazer este filme. Hoje lhes revelo o primeiro desafio que dei a mim mesma. Como contar a história de uma garota de aldeia que se torna um soldado homem, vira uma guerreira definitiva e uma lenda… Essa foi a foto que tirei com uma única atriz. É a mesma mulher em cada frame. Essas foram as primeiras imagens que o estúdio viu da minha visão de Mulan. Continuarei postando essas memórias até poder compartilhar todo o filme com todos vocês. I had been looking forward to and working towards this day for 2+ years, so to be standing here today in such different circumstances brings a tidal wave of emotions. My birthday is tomorrow, and the original release date once felt like divine serendipity, but looking now at the situation, I am eternally grateful for the hidden gift that this delay revealed. Now, more than ever, we humans must look to each other for kinship, support, companionship. It is nothing short of a miracle that all of the important lessons I learned while making Mulan are being given the chance to be shared, even without it being released. I want this delay to elevate what is truly important in this day and age- that to win any war against an enemy, we must work together, learn from each other, and fight it as a collective unit. I’ve always loved movies because they have the power to send a universal message and to unite a world. This year, I learned that a disease has the potential to do that exact same thing. Let us join together and support our medical professionals, volunteers, and essential services workers that are the backbone of our civilization. Without them, we would be lost. So while many of us may feel helpless to fight this virus from the comfort of our isolation, it does not mean we cannot contribute. Send words, prayers, blessings, encouragement, and support to the people who are out there fighting on our behalf. Stay socially distant, smart, and careful so we do not needlessly endanger others through our actions. Breathe in, breathe out, and learn to love a little more each day.
